Where Is God When Life Doesn't Go as Planned?
Scripture: Romans 6
Even Heroes Have Moments of Weakness
When we think about biblical heroes like Abraham, Sarah, Moses, and David, it's easy to focus on their remarkable faith. But Scripture tells a more honest story.
Abraham trusted God enough to leave everything familiar behind, yet he also doubted God's promises. Sarah laughed when she heard she would have a child. Abraham lied to protect himself in Egypt. He grew impatient with God's timing and created painful consequences for his family.
Their faith was real. So were their failures.
Perhaps that's why their stories still speak to us today.
The Moment Everything Changed
One of the most difficult stories in Scripture is God's call for Abraham to offer Isaac as a sacrifice.
For generations, readers have wrestled with this passage. Yet at the very moment Abraham raised the knife, God intervened. A ram appeared in the thicket. Isaac was spared.
Three different times in this story, the focus returns to God's provision. The point is not blind obedience or good fortune. The point is that God provides.
Faith isn't built on luck. Faith rests in God's providence.
Providence Doesn't Mean Life Is Easy
Sometimes we misunderstand what God's provision looks like. Providence does not mean every prayer is answered exactly as we hope. It doesn't guarantee good health, financial success, or an easy road.
There will still be disappointment.
There will still be grief.
There will still be seasons when life doesn't make sense.
But even then, God continues providing exactly what we need to take the next step.
Sometimes that provision comes as strength. Sometimes it comes through another person. Sometimes it arrives as unexpected hope when we thought there was none.
Remembering God's Faithfulness
Near the end of Moses' life, after forty years of wandering in the wilderness, the Israelites finally stood at the edge of the Promised Land. Moses knew he would not cross the Jordan River with them. Before saying goodbye, he offered these words:
Be strong and courageous... for the Lord your God goes with you. God will never leave you nor forsake you.
Those words reminded the people that although the future was uncertain, God's presence was not. The same God who provided manna in the wilderness would continue providing in the land ahead.
Looking Beyond What's Directly Ahead
As a church, we celebrated Chloe's graduation and the exciting journey waiting for her at Saginaw Valley State University. Like every graduate, she cannot see every step that lies ahead.
None of us can.
But she carries something far more valuable than certainty.
She carries faith.
She carries the encouragement of family, church, and a God who promises never to leave her.
Wherever life leads, God's providence will go with her.
Looking for the Ram in the Thicket
Most of us will never face the exact circumstances Abraham faced. But all of us will experience moments when we wonder if God is still present.
Plans fall apart. Prayers seem unanswered. The future feels uncertain.
Those are the moments when faith invites us to widen our perspective.
Sometimes the answer isn't directly in front of us. Sometimes it's just off to the side—like the ram in the thicket.
God's provision often appears in unexpected places. Looking back, we realize God was already at work, providing exactly what we needed, even if we couldn't see it at the time.
One of the joys of church life is walking alongside one another through life's milestones. This Sunday, we celebrated Chloe's graduation as she prepares to study nursing at Saginaw Valley State University. Like every graduate stepping into a new chapter, she doesn't know exactly what lies ahead. But she does know the One who goes before her.
Whether we're graduating, beginning a new career, facing a health challenge, repairing a relationship, or simply wondering what comes next, God's promise remains the same.
We may not know the map.
But we know the One who leads us.
And that is enough.
