The Keyboard Shortcut That Points to the Gospel
Scripture: Romans 6
If Only Life Had an Undo Button
Anyone who has spent time working on a computer knows the relief of pressing Control+Z.
Delete the wrong sentence? Control+Z.
Move the wrong image? Control+Z.
Accidentally erase your work? Control+Z.
It's one of the most appreciated keyboard shortcuts ever created because it gives us another chance.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if life worked the same way?
Most of us can think of words we wish we hadn't spoken, decisions we wish we could change, or relationships we wish we had handled differently.
If only there were an undo button.
When One Word Changes Everything
Bible researcher Ed Oxford discovered just how much power a single word can have.
While studying the history of Bible translations, he noticed that one verse in 1 Corinthians had been translated very differently in a twentieth-century Bible than in much older translations. Curious, he began studying ancient manuscripts and early translations to understand what the original writers intended.
His research uncovered something surprising.
A translation choice made in the mid-twentieth century shaped decades of theological understanding and caused profound hurt for many people. Even after later translation committees acknowledged the wording had been a mistake and revised it, the damage had already been done.
There was no Control+Z.
Only the difficult work of healing, listening, and rebuilding trust.
Grace Doesn't Erase the Past
The Apostle Paul understood this longing. Earlier in his ministry, Paul himself had persecuted Christians. He knew firsthand what it meant to carry regret.
When critics misunderstood his teaching about grace, Paul wished he could simply erase the confusion. Instead, he patiently explained again and again that God's grace was never permission to ignore sin.
Grace transforms us.
Because of Christ, our old life no longer defines us. We are invited into a new life marked by love, mercy, and hope. The past remains part of our story.
It simply no longer has the final word.
Living the New Life
Paul reminds believers that they are "dead to sin and alive to God."
That doesn't mean Christians never make mistakes again. It means sin is no longer the force that controls who we are. Instead of living out of fear or shame, we are invited to live out of gratitude.
Instead of asking, "How much can I get away with?"
We begin asking, "How can I love more faithfully?"
This new life changes the way we treat one another. It changes our relationships. It changes our communities. And sometimes it helps heal wounds that have existed for generations.
The Grace That Makes New Beginnings Possible
Some things in life cannot simply be undone. Words leave scars. Actions have consequences. History cannot be rewritten.
Yet the Gospel offers something even greater than an undo button.
It offers redemption.
God does not pretend our past never happened. Instead, God meets us within it, offering forgiveness, healing, and the opportunity to begin again. That is the heart of grace.
It doesn't erase our story. It transforms it.
Reflection
Where might God be inviting you to stop wishing for an undo button and instead embrace the healing work of grace?
