What Nintendo Can Teach Us About Faith
Scripture: John 14
When We Want a Guarantee
In the early days of video gaming, the industry nearly collapsed.
Too many low-quality games flooded the market, leaving consumers frustrated and unsure what to trust. In response, Nintendo introduced something simple but powerful: the “Seal of Quality.”
It was a promise. A guarantee that what you were buying would work and meet a certain standard. And it changed everything.
That desire for certainty hasn’t gone away.
We still want to know what’s real. What can be trusted. What won’t disappoint us.
And that same desire shows up in our faith.
The Disciples Wanted Certainty Too
In John 14, the disciples are filled with uncertainty.
Jesus has just washed their feet. He has spoken about betrayal. He has predicted denial. And now, he tells them he is going away.
It’s no wonder they feel anxious.
Thomas speaks up first, asking how they can know the way forward. Then Philip takes it even further:
“Show us God, and we will be satisfied.”
In other words:
Give us proof.
Give us certainty.
Give us something we can trust.
Jesus’ Answer Changes Everything
Jesus responds in a way that is both simple and profound:
“Whoever has seen me has seen God.”
This is his answer. This is the “seal of quality” they are looking for.
Not a sign in the sky.
Not a dramatic display of power.
But himself.
Jesus points to his life—his actions, his love, his presence—as the clearest expression of who God is.
And then he makes an even more surprising claim:
Those who believe in him will continue his work.
What Faith Looks Like in Action
If Jesus is the visible expression of God, then following him means reflecting that same love in the world.
It looks like:
Serving others
Forgiving freely
Welcoming those who feel left out
Caring for both physical and spiritual needs
When we live this way, we don’t just believe in Jesus—we reveal him.
Faith becomes something visible. Tangible. Real.
The Promises We Can Hold Onto
Jesus doesn’t just offer a call to action. He also offers reassurance.
He promises:
An eternal home with God
A constant presence through the Spirit
A path forward—he is the way, the truth, and the life
These are not meant to be threats or barriers.
They are invitations.
Jesus is not saying, “Get it exactly right or be excluded.”
He is saying, “Trust me. Follow me. I am with you.”
Living with Confidence, Not Fear
Faith doesn’t eliminate every question.
But it does give us something to stand on.
In a world that constantly shifts, where messages compete for our attention and certainty feels hard to find, Jesus offers something steady.
Not a product.
Not a system.
But a relationship.
And through that relationship, we are reminded:
We are not alone.
We are not abandoned.
We are held in God’s love.
Reflection
Where in your life are you seeking certainty—and how might Jesus already be offering you something deeper than proof?
