The Tender Side of God
Scripture: Psalm 94
The Images We Carry About God
When many of us picture God, we often imagine strength and power.
The Psalms frequently describe God as a mighty protector—a warrior who rescues people from danger and stands strong in battle. It’s no surprise that generations of people have imagined God as a powerful male figure with strength beyond measure.
But Scripture gives us another image too.
Alongside the strength of God, the Bible also reveals God’s tenderness, compassion, and nurturing care.
Again and again, the writers of Scripture describe God in ways that resemble the love and comfort of a mother.
A God Who Comforts
In Psalm 22, David speaks of feeling safe in God’s presence much like a child feels safe in the arms of a mother.
Isaiah goes even further, declaring:
“As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you.”
Even the name “El Shaddai,” used in Genesis, may carry maternal imagery connected to nurturing and care.
These passages remind us that God is not limited by human categories. The fullness of God includes both strength and gentleness. Justice and compassion. Protection and comfort.
God not only fights for us. God also holds us close.
The Comfort We Remember
Most of us can remember moments when someone cared for us with tenderness.
A hug after an injury. Encouragement during a difficult season. A calm voice reassuring us when life felt uncertain.
For many people, those memories are connected to a mother or mother-like figure.
Sometimes comfort doesn’t remove the pain—but it reminds us we are not alone in it.
One definition of comfort is “to stand alongside someone with support and encouragement when the situation cannot be changed.”
That kind of presence matters deeply.
And when we offer that kind of care to one another, we reflect the comforting presence of God.
God’s Presence in Difficult Moments
Psalm 94 was written during a time of anxiety and injustice. The Psalmist looked around and saw wrongdoing, arrogance, and suffering.
Yet even in the middle of fear and uncertainty, the writer says:
“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.”
The Psalmist recognizes that God’s steadfast love provides stability when everything else feels shaky.
“My foot is slipping,” the writer says, “but your steadfast love held me up.”
That image is deeply personal.
God is not distant. God stays near. God supports, comforts, and steadies us when life feels overwhelming.
The Comfort We Share
Jesus also used nurturing imagery when speaking about God, comparing God’s care to a mother hen gathering her chicks beneath her wings.
This reminds us that God’s comfort often comes through people.
Through encouragement.
Through kindness.
Through someone willing to stand beside us in difficult moments.
Every time we support one another, offer compassion, or acknowledge someone’s gifts and struggles, we participate in the comforting work of God.
A Love That Does Not Leave
Mother’s Day can bring many emotions.
For some, it is a joyful celebration. For others, it carries grief, longing, or complicated memories.
Yet underneath all those experiences is a deeper reminder:
God’s love remains constant.
Whether through earthly mothers, spiritual mentors, friends, or unexpected companions along the way, many of us have experienced glimpses of God’s nurturing presence through people who cared for us well.
And even when human relationships fall short, God’s comfort does not.
God continues to draw near with tenderness, mercy, and love.
