Where Is Jesus When We Walk Away?

Scripture: Luke 24

The Journey That Changes Us

Pilgrimages have long been a way people seek meaning, healing, and connection. One of the most well-known is the Camino de Santiago in Spain, a journey walked by thousands each year.

For many, it’s not just about reaching the destination. It’s about what happens along the way. The conversations. The reflection. The unexpected encounters that change a person from the inside out.

The journey itself becomes the transformation.

This is the kind of journey we see in Luke 24.

Walking Away in Disappointment

On the afternoon of the resurrection, two disciples were walking away from Jerusalem.

They weren’t celebrating. They weren’t hopeful.

They were grieving.

“We had hoped…” they said.

Those three words carry the weight of disappointment. The kind we feel when something we believed in doesn’t turn out the way we expected. When hope gives way to confusion and loss.

They had believed Jesus would redeem Israel. They had seen his power, his miracles, his teaching.

And now, he was gone.

So they walked away.

When We Don’t Recognize Him

As they walked, a stranger joined them.

Luke tells us it was Jesus, but they didn’t recognize him.

It seems surprising. How could they not know him after following him for years?

But grief has a way of clouding our vision. So does disappointment.

Sometimes we are so focused on what we have lost that we miss what is right in front of us.

There is also another possibility.

Sometimes we don’t recognize Jesus because we are not yet ready to see him.

The Power of Being Heard

What Jesus does next is remarkable.

He listens.

He doesn’t interrupt. He doesn’t correct them right away. He doesn’t rush to reveal himself.

He lets them speak.

He allows them to tell their story, to express their confusion, their sorrow, their unmet expectations.

This kind of listening is rare—and deeply needed.

In a world where loneliness is increasing and many feel unseen or unheard, the simple act of listening can be powerful. It communicates value. It creates connection. It opens the door for something more.

When Jesus Reveals Himself

After listening, Jesus begins to speak.

He helps them understand what has happened. He connects their experience to the larger story of Scripture. He gives them a new way to see what they had just lived through.

And then, at the right moment, their eyes are opened.

They recognize him.

Everything changes.

The ones who were walking away in grief now run back with purpose. They return to share the good news:

Jesus is alive.

Finding Jesus on the Road

This story reminds us that we don’t have to go on a long pilgrimage to encounter Christ.

We meet him in everyday moments.

On a walk through our neighborhood.
In a conversation with a friend.
In times of joy—and in times of struggle.

Jesus walks with us.

He listens. He waits. He reveals himself when we are ready.

And when we recognize him, we are changed.

Reflection

Where in your life might Jesus already be walking beside you—even if you haven’t recognized him yet?
